Deluxe Jo (127.6 cm) - Classic Woods
Classic Aikido Jo - 4.21 Shaku
Made in Japan (Kyushu region)
Available woods: Red Oak, White Oak, & Buna
Lenght: 4.21 Shaku (127.6 cm) | Diameter: 24 mm, 27 mm.
Finish : Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish
This classic Aikido Jo is available in Ichiikashi (red oak), Shirakashi (white oak), or Buna (Japanese beech). The length is a standard 4.21 shaku (127.6 cm), with 2 different diameters to choose from.
The standard thickness is 24 mm (8 bu) and the 27 model is designed to work tanren (reinforcement), which is very important in some Aikido schools. The 27 mm model is very strong, which also makes it a great Jo to practice with very violent contacts.
While the red and white oak models will sustain violent contacts during practice, Buna is slightly less resistant and will therefore not be suited for practice at full power.
Buna is significantly lighter, but still fairly resistant in comparison to its weight. A 27 mm Buna Jo will have a weight and solidity comparable to the white Oak 24 mm while offering a better grip, especially for practitioners with large hands, and it is smoother - more pleasant to touch - so it slips better in hands than oak. Buna is a wood available in fairly large quantities and well managed in Japan, choosing a Buna Jo a good choice if you care about sustainability, and its color is not that far from white oak.
All the classic Jo are adapted to the practice of Aikido but also Jodo.
- Choice of wood species: red oak, white oak, Buna
- Diameter: 24~25 mm (8bu) or 27 mm (9bu).
- Available finish: Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish
- Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki
Finish options:
In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane varnished weapons and replaced the finish by a "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.
Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal based oil.
Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sand paper), then we finish the weapon with high quality bee wax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantee an excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend at least to oil your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue).
